What is Full Spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum CBD utilizes all the cannabinoid compounds in a hemp plant. CBD stands for cannabidiol, the main compound in full-spectrum CBD. Other phytochemicals include terpenes, flavonoids, and the famous compound THC. Terpenes are bioactive compounds that assist cannabinoids in their absorption into the body. Flavonoids are valued for their anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychoactive compound known for supplying a “high” typically associated with marijuana. Full-spectrum CBD contains a trace amount of THC (0.3% or less) and does not normally produce the same “high” as marijuana.

Entourage Effect

The combination of active compounds in full-spectrum CBD joins forces to enhance the benefits expressed by each of the individual cannabinoids. When these cannabinoids and compounds unite synergically in this way, they produce a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. Full-spectrum CBD users can enjoy the added boost of benefits that come with it!

The body’s endocannabidnoid system (ECS) contains several chemical receptors and signals that are responsible for regulating homeostasis—the balance of internal conditions and functions. ESC receptors regulate several functions, such as temperature, inflammation response, sleep cycle, heart rate, and many more. CBD attaches to these receptors to support homeostasis. Through the entourage effect, CBD may provide additional support.

What is Broad Spectrum CBD?

Just like full spectrum, broad spectrum utilizes cannabidiol as well as all the other compounds within a hemp plant. However, there is one major difference. THC is removed after the extraction process, eliminating it from broad-spectrum CBD. Because broad spectrum still contains terpenes and flavonoids, the entourage effect can still be generated, even without THC. The other cannabinoids can still combine to enhance the effects of CBD. Along with terpenes and flavonoids, broad-spectrum CBD retains several cannabinoids in full-spectrum CBD, such as CBN and CBG. Again, THC is not required to experience the entourage effect.

Key Differences Between Full Spectrum vs. Broad Spectrum CBD

Both spectrums offer incredible health benefits for CBD users. Full and broad spectrum are identical, with only one crucial difference: THC.

Pros and Cons of Full Spectrum CBD

Pros:

  • Full-spectrum CBD oil offers the greatest impact of the entourage effect
  • It can deliver up to 0.3% THC, which activates the brain’s reward system by signaling the release of dopamine.

Cons:

  • It may be more regulated and restricted at the state level.
  • THC in the system may be banned by employers or organizations

Pros and Cons of Broad Spectrum CBD

Pros:

  • Broad-spectrum CBD doesn’t have THC, which can eliminate the concern of submitting to a drug test or managing state restrictions. It’s unlikely, but THC can activate a positive response in a drug test.
  • It still offers the wonderful benefits of the entourage effect.

 Cons:

  • Depending on the quality of the CBD manufacturer’s extraction process and testing processes broad-spectrum CBD should show no trace amounts of THC.
  • Employers may sometimes ban CBD altogether, including CBD without THC.
